“It’s been a hell of a ride for us all,” says the smiling woman sitting
opposite me. Although she’s spent the last hour discussing plumbing
and has a book to finish writing before bedtime, Fiona Herbert is relaxed
and friendly. Fiona is Lady Carnarvon, with 200 years of history behind
the title, and she’s met me under the soaring Gothic columns of the
entrance to Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey.
