There are lots of ways to save money on holiday without sacrificing your enjoyment.

Seniors Card savings
If you are over 60 and have a Seniors Card, you can enjoy a range of travel and tourism discounts. You can also request a free directory that lists businessess offering Seniors Card discounts from each state and territory. Contact Seniors Card in your state or visit the Seniors Card website: www.seniorscard.com.au

Seniors discounts apply on Qantas domestic flights and some air travel overseas. Sometimes you can get better bargains with fully discounted fares, but these fares can also be less flexible. It's always worth checking both options with the airlines or your travel agent.

You will also get cheap rail fares in North America and a number of European countries. A good source of information on seniors rail discounts is RailPlus, Australasia's leading marketer of international rail travel. Their website is www.railplus.com.au or you can call 03 9642 8644.

Travel off-peak
One of the best things about being retired or semi-retired is that you have greater opportunity to travel when others don't - and that means greater bargaining power.

If you want to travel by plane, get your travel agent to source the best low-season deals. There are cheaper flights to destinations such as the Pacific Islands if you go midweek. If you are flexible about when you want to go, you can take advantage of last-minute airline offers.

If you are planning a short trip, many accommodation places offer great deals if you stay midweek. It's a great opportunity to save money, so always ask about off-peak discounts.
